THE BOOKMy love of handmade books was kindled the first time I was allowed to touch a small book of Japanese prints. It contained fragile black and white woodcuts and was bound simply by having its doubled-over pages sewn together. You could see the frayed edges of the handmade paper. This little gem inspired me to make my own books. At the time, I was also developing an interest in writing. Language has its own creative dynamic. The way we shape a sentence from words to construct meaning is a fascinating process in its own right. Given the opportunity to set and print my texts in traditional lead type, the way was cleared for me to produce my own handmade book. |
